The No. 3 Grand Valley State women's basketball team clinched the regular season GLIAC title in tonight's 54-44 victory over the Davenport Panthers. GVSU advanced to 22-1 on the season and 15-1 in the GLIAC for their 17th straight win this season.
While the Lakers started off slow offensively tonight, GVSU was able to pull away in the second half. The Panthers started the night with 6-0 lead over the Lakers, but Grand Valley went on a 12-4 run to close out the quarter and lead 12-10 heading into the second. The Lakers were looking to sophomore Joslyn Brennan in the first half, who shot 80% and led all scorers at halftime with nine points.
Going into the second half with just a five point advantage over DU, the Lakers were looking to pull away in the third and fourth. Despite being outscored 8-7 in the third quarter, GVSU had their best offensive quarter of the night in the fourth. The Lakers shot 56% in the fourth and outscored the Panthers 22-16 to give them the 54-44 win over DU.
Tonight's win not only clinched the GLIAC title for the Lakers, but was also head coach Mike Williams 300th overall career win. The Lakers were led tonight by sophomore Ellie Droste, who finished with 15 points and five rebounds, followed by Joslyn Brennan who finished with nine points for GVSU.
The Lakers are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 19 at home for Senior Day against Northwood. Tip off is set for 1:00 p.m.
