ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley men's golf program returned back to The Meadows for the Folds of Honor Qualifier and took advantage of being back on a familiar course, getting out to a 15 stroke lead after day one, and placing three golfers in the top-5 individually.
The Folds of Honor Qualifier event winner will automatically be a part of next year's Folds of Honor Collegiate at the American Dunes Golf Course. After their strong start to the qualifying event, the Lakers are putting themselves in position to be in the event for the second straight year come next fall.
The recently minted #17 team in the nation, GVSU holds a 15-shot advantage after the first two rounds of play at The Meadows. The Lakers had rounds of 283 and 278 and are seven under for the tournament so far. Findlay is in second at +8, followed by defending national champions and the number two team in the country Lee, who is sitting at +24. Keiser is in fourth at +29, and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is fifth at +34.
Already with one individual win one the season, sophomore
Charles DeLong is looking to make it two, as he leads by six strokes, carding rounds of 68 and 65, and is at -9 with 18 holes to play, and has recorded 11 birdies and two eagles.
Nick Krueger is tied for second place at three under, shooting rounds of 69 and 70 after recording seven birdies. After also tallying seven birdies,
Drew Coble is in a tie for fourth place, shooting two under par, with rounds of 68 and 72.
Andrew Gwilliams is tied for 21
st (+9) for the Lakers, with rounds of 78 and 73, with six birdies on the day.
Charlie Cooley is tied for 26
th at eleven over, shooting an 82 and a 71, with four birdies.
GVSU has four individuals in the tournament as well.
Cooper Bell is tied for 12
th at five over, shooting rounds of 72 and 75 with four birdies.
Alex Jordan is tied for 16
th at +7, with six birdies over his rounds of 77 and 72.
Tanner Moore is in 51
st (+18) with four birdies over his rounds of 83 and 77.
Murphy Kehoe is in 52
nd (+21), with rounds of 80 and 83, with two birdies and an eagle.
"We got great play from DeLong today start to finish and the other guys played fairly well," said head coach
Gary Bissell. "We are looking forward to taking the final round one shot at a time."
