Volleyball Closes Out Regular Season Road Schedule With Loss To Ferris

BIG RAPIDS, MICH. – The final road trip of the regular season saw the Grand Valley women's volleyball team travel up US 131 to take on rival Ferris State. The Lakers battled the Bulldogs for four hard fought sets, but FSU was able to escape with a 3-1 victory.

"I loved the heart and fight our team showed this evening. We kept fighting late in each set to give our offense additional opportunities to score points and find ways to win," stated head coach Jason Johnson. "Unfortunately, we just couldn't come up with the one or two additional points late in sets three and four to win. Looking forward to getting back on the court tomorrow."

GVSU jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in set one, but Ferris was able to answer back and tied the game at 14. From there the Bulldogs were able to take the lead and hold on to take it 25-20. The Lakers were able to rebound in set two, as they never trailed after the first three points of the game, and evened up the match by winning 25-18. In a crucial set three, both teams exchanged mini scoring runs as neither squad could really pull away. With the Lakers holding a slim 23-22 advantage, FSU used one of those scoring runs, ending the set on a 3-0 run to win 25-23. Set four was a marathon match, featuring six set points, but the Bulldogs were able to pull it out 30-28 after another set ending 3-0 run.

Sarah Wight paced the offense with 17 kills on a .282 hitting percentage, while Kendall Stover was close behind with kills and five digs. Jordyn Gates had 13 kills and 30 assists. Rachel Jacquay had 26 assists, while Emily Holbrook added 27 digs.

The loss drops GVSU to 15-11 overall and 8-7 in GLIAC play, while Ferris moves to 18-9 overall and 13-2 in league play.
