ALLENDALE, MICH. – It was the battle of the Lakers this afternoon in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena, as Lake Superior State was in town to take on the GVSU women's volleyball squad. After LSSU took set one, GVSU responded in a big way, taking the next three sets to win 3-1.
Lake State took an early 7-6 lead and never relinquished that advantage throughout the first set as they won 25-17. GVSU bounced back to take set two 25-14, ending the set on a 9-3 scoring run. Set three was back and forth, and LSSU took a slim 17-15 lead late, but GV was able to climb back into the set and overtook LSSU and won set three 25-21. Set four was close until Grand Valley used a 5-0 scoring run to go up 17-14, a lead they would hold the rest of the way as they closed out the set with three straight points capped off by a
Savannah Thompson kill to win 25-19.
Jordyn Gates had another triple-double, her ninth of the season, as she tallied 13 kills, 22 assists, and 10 digs.
Savannah Thompson notched 11 kills and 11 digs, while
Mattie McCabe contributed 10 kills and six blocks.
Rachel Jacquay passed out 27 assists, and GVSU swung at a .301 clip as a team and picked up 10 total blocks.
Kaitlyn Bingham came off the bench to start the final three sets and recorded 11 digs and a service ace.
GVSU is not 16-11 overall and 9-7 in conference, while their loss drops LSSU to 5-22 overall and 4-12 in league play.
