The Laker women's basketball team won their 10th game in a row on Saturday, Jan. 22 against the Northern Michigan Wildcats. After defeating the Wildcats 61-48, GVSU is now 8-1 in the GLIAC and 15-1 on the season.
For both the Lakers and Wildcats, the first quarter was the best offensive quarter of the game. GVSU scored 20 points, shooting 62% from the floor and 4-7 from behind the arc. The Wildcats shot 75%, a perfect 1-1 from the three, and scored 16 points.
With a four point advantage heading into the second quarter, the Lakers were able to extend their lead to seven but struggled to pull away. The Wildcats brought it within one (29-28), until Rylie Bisballe went on a 6-0 for the Lakers to close out the quarter and GVSU led 35-28 at halftime. Bisballe scored 10 points in the second quarter and led all scorers at the end of the first half with 14 points
Sophomore Ellie Droste scored the first basket of the second half and GVSU looked to pull away. Doubling their halftime lead, the Lakers had a 14 point lead over NMU with five minutes left in the quarter. However, the Lakers struggled to slow down NMU's Makaylee Kuhn and the Wildcats went on an 8-2 run to close out the third. GVSU held the Wildcats to just 17% shooting in the fourth and only gave up two field goals. The Lakers outscored Northern Michigan 11-6 in the final quarter and won 61-48, giving GVSU a complete sweep in the U.P. this week.
The Lakers were led by sophomore Rylie Bisballe, who finished with 20 points and seven rebounds. Senior Qay Stanton also chipped in 13 points for the Lakers and dished out five assists, followed by Ellie Droste who finished with nine points.
The Lakers are back in action against Parkside on Thursday, Jan. 27 at the Fieldhouse Arena with tip off set for 6:00 p.m.
