The Grand Valley State women's basketball team defeated the Parkside Rangers 67-34 in their second matchup of the season on Thursday, Jan. 27. GVSU's strong offensive performance gave them their 11th win in a row and the Lakers advanced to 9-1 in the GLIAC and 16-1 on the season.
The tone was set in the first quarter as GVSU was firing on all cylinders. The Lakers shot 73% (11-15) from the floor and 68% from behind the arc. Starting the second quarter with a 15 point lead, GVSU went on a 14-3 run to extend their lead to 26 with 3:30 left in the half. A layup from junior Courtney Sharland with 1:38 left gave the Lakers their largest lead of the half at 28 points (44-16).
The Lakers closed out the quarter with a 44-21 advantage heading into the third. Forcing 11 turnovers in the first half, GVSU was able to capitalize and score 14 points off of Parkside's turnovers. Sophomore Ellie Droste led all scorers at halftime with 15 points and Courtney Sharland finished the half with nine rebounds.
The Lakers outscored Parkside 13-10 in the third and led 57-31 heading into the fourth quarter. GVSU's best defensive quarter was in the fourth as the Rangers shot 9% and the Lakers held them to just three points in the final quarter. Freshman Abrie Cabana stepped up in the fourth, scoring five of GVSU's 10 points.
Ellie Droste led the Lakers with 23 points, shooting a perfect 5-5 from the foul line. Sophomore Rylie Bisballe scored 12 points and grabbed six boards, followed by Courtney Sharland who finished with 10 rebounds for the Lakers. Senior Qay Stanton also dished out nine assists for GVSU.
The Lakers are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 29 as they host Purdue Northwest with tip off set for 1:00 p.m.
