The Grand Valley State women's basketball team picked up another win on the road as they took down the Michigan Tech Huskies 74-70 in an overtime battle. GVSU advances to 14-1 on the season and 7-1 in the GLIAC.
Senior Qay Stanton started the Laker offense tonight, scoring the first bucket of the game. The Lakers and Huskies played a close first half of the quarter, while GVSU trailed 12-9 with just under five minutes left in the first. Started by sophomore Ellie Droste, the Lakers went on a 16-0 run to close out the quarter and led 25-12 at the end of the first quarter.
The Huskies started the second with an 11-0 run of their own and brought it back within two (25-23). While both teams shot 50% from the floor in the second quarter, the Huskies outscored the Lakers 20-14. GVSU led 39-32 heading into the second half and Ellie Droste led all scorers with 13 points, shooting 3-4 from behind the arc.
While GVSU was able to extend their lead to 10 points, the Huskies shot 58% compared to the Lakers' 23% in the third and tied it up at 48-48 heading into the fourth quarter. While both teams struggled to pull away, Michigan Tech was able to take a three point lead with 1:45 left in the quarter. A basket from sophomore Hadley Miller would bring it within one with 39 seconds left. The Lakers were put in a situation where they had to foul in order to get possession of the ball back and the Huskies hit both free throws to take another three point advantage with just five seconds left. Coming out of a timeout, the Lakers ran senior Emily Spitzley off of a screen where she was able to get a shot off and connect for the game-tying bucket at the buzzer.
It was 60-60 heading into the five minute overtime. Junior Courtney Sharland made the first bucket in OT and the Lakers started the period with a 6-0 run. The Huskies were able to pull within three, but the Lakers extended their lead to seven with just 28 seconds left. The Huskies' late efforts weren't enough to catch the Lakers in the final 30 seconds and GVSU won the game in overtime 74-70.
The Lakers finished the night shooting 50% from the floor and 53% from behind the arc, connecting on 10-of-19 three point buckets. The Lakers also scored 24 points off of MTU's 17 turnovers. GVSU was led by sophomore Ellie Droste, who finished with 31 points and shot 50% on the night. Senior Emily Spitzley not only hit the three point bucket to send it into OT, but went a perfect 4-4 from three and finished with 20 points tonight. Qay Stanton also chipped in seven points for the Lakers and sophomore Rylie Bisballe finished with seven rebounds tonight.
The Lakers are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Northern Michigan.
