The Grand Valley State women's basketball team won their eighth game in a row on Thursday, Jan. 13 in a 67-59 victory over Ferris. The 13-1 Lakers are first in the GLIAC and advance to 6-1 in the conference after tonight's big win over their local rivals.
Despite trailing 10-4 to start, the Lakers went on a 14-3 point run to take the lead 18-13 at the end of the first. GVSU shot 47% in the first quarter and went 4-5 from behind the arc, with two of those coming from senior Emily Spitzley. Spitzley started the Laker offense at the beginning of the second quarter with her third three point basket of the night. GVSU extended their lead to as much as 10, until sophomore Ellie Droste made a layup to close out the half and give the Lakers a 12 point advantage heading into the second half. Droste led all scorers at halftime with 14 points, shooting a perfect 2-2 from the three.
Sophomore Rylie Bisballe scored the first bucket of the half for the Lakers, extending their lead to 14. However, the Bulldogs responded with a nine point run of their own and brought it within five within the first three minutes of action in the third quarter. Neither team scored in the last two minutes and the Lakers led 47-40 heading into the fourth quarter. Defensively, the Lakers held the Bulldogs 38% from the floor in the fourth quarter and outscored Ferris 20-19 in the final quarter.
The Lakers forced 11 turnovers, scoring 18 points off of FSU's turnovers, and scored 28 of their 67 points in the paint. GVSU and FSU finished with a similar shooting performance as the Lakers were 24-55 and the Bulldogs were 24-54. The Lakers were led by senior Emily Spitzley, who finished with 22 points and shot 4-8 from behind the arc. Sophomore Rylie Bisballe finished with 19 points and eight rebounds, followed by sophomore Ellie Droste who shot 70% from the floor and finished with 17 points.
After the postponement of the Lake Superior State game originally scheduled for this Saturday, the Lakers next game is Thursday, Jan. 27 against Parkside. Tip off is set for 6:00 p.m.
