The Grand Valley State volleyball team defeated the Davenport Panthers on Friday, Sept. 24 in their twelfth match in a row on the road. GVSU is still leading the GLIAC South with a conference record of 3-1 and 7-5 overall.
The Lakers defeated the Panthers in set one 25-22 and again in set two 25-19. Struggling to slow down the Panther offense, the Lakers fell in set three 21-25. To cinch the win over Davenport, the Lakers were able to pull out a close set four with a score of 27-25.
Grand Valley State finished with 51 kills (.222 kill percentage), 20 blocks, and 61 digs. The Lakers were led by senior Ali Thompson who finished with 17 kills (.405 kill percentage) and 20 digs. Junior Sarah Wight finished with 12 kills (.346 kill percentage) and 8 blocks, followed by senior Abby Graham and junior Lisa Sullivan who each tallied nine kills a piece.
"I'm really impressed with our team's grit and ability to bounce back after a tough loss last night," said head coach Jason Johnson. "We've played so many five set matches, the girls are definitely a little tired with all of the travel we've had. To be able to come into this environment with a great crowd and a great team, I thought we played a really hard-fought match."
The Lakers will play on their home floor on Saturday, Oct. 2, against Parkside at 1:00 p.m.
