#9 GVSU Football Hits The Road For A Matchup At Michigan Tech

#9 Grand Valley State will hit the road for a non-league matchup at Michigan Tech Saturday (Sept. 23). Kickoff at Sherman Field is set for 1 p.m. and all of the action can be heard live at 96.9 LAV beginning with the tailgate show at 11:30 a.m. The Lakers enter contest with a 2-0 record, while the Huskies are coming off a bye week and stand 1-1. Grand Valley State is 29-20 in road openers, including a 16-4 mark since 2001.

Grand Valley State leads the all-time series by a 28-4 margin. The Lakers claimed a 21-16 victory over the Huskies in their last trip to Houghton (2019) and have won four consecutive games in the series. The Lakers have scored 40 or more points 10 times in the last 17 games and 18 times overall versus the Huskies. 

LAST WEEK
#9 Grand Valley State claimed a 45-24 victory over Wisconsin-La Crosse. The Lakers scored on their opening possession, but turned the ball over on consecutive plays and yielded 17 straight points. GVSU scored the next 24 points and added a pair of TDs in the fourth quarter to secure the win. QB Cade Peterson accounted for 303 yards of total offense (214 passing/89 rushing), while Bryce Young-Walls (88) and Tariq Reid (86) each contributed to the 320 rushing yards. WR Hunter Rison caught two passes for 107 yards and a TD. LB Abe Swanson led the defense with 10 tackles, while DT Seth Hoonhorst added seven stops. 1.5 TFL and a QB sack.  

LAKERY BYTES
• The GVSU defense has forced its first two opponents (CSU-Pueblo/UWL) into nine three-and-out possessions and 18-of-20 total possessions that have not resulted in points have consisted of six plays or less. Five drives have resulted in negative yards and 12 drives have consisted of 10 yards or less. 

• Through two games in 2021, 13 different Laker receivers have caught a pass, while eight different players have scored a TD.

• GVSU toted the ball 42 times for 320 yards and four TDs vs. UW-La Crosse. The Lakers are averaging 254.5 rushing yards per game, ranking seventh nationally and second in the GLIAC. 

• GVSU is averaging 27.1 ypr on kickoffs and 13.5 ypr on punts. The Lakers' opponents are averaging 16.8 ypr on kickoffs and 1.5 ypr on punts. In addition, GVSU's average field position following a kickoff is the 33 yard line, while opponents are starting on their 21 yard line. 

• The Laker defense limited CSU-Pueblo to 29 rushing yards on 20 attempts (1.5 ypr) and leads the GLIAC in rushing defense at 67.5 ypg. 

• GVSU leads the GLIAC in third down percentage defense .270 (7-for-26). On the flip side, the Lakers rank second in third down conversion at .480 (10-for-21).  

• GVSU has recorded seven drives that consisted of eight plays or more that have resulted in points. All total, the Lakers have scored on 11-of-24 drives (.458) this season. 

• The GVSU defense recorded 12 tackles for loss (-34), four QB sacks (-17), 19 QB hurries, seven pass deflections, recovered a fumble and picked off two passes.   

GLIAC OFFENSIVE POW - Wk 3
• Grand Valley State sophomore quarterback Cade Peterson was named the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Lakers' 45-24 victory over Wisconsin-La Crosse. Peterson completed 12-of-17 passes for 214 yards and two TDs, while rushing for 89 yards on four carries. Peterson opened the second half with a 69-yard run on GVSU's first play from scrimmage and accounted for 303 yards of total offense and two touchdowns for the game. 

GLIAC DEFENSIVE POW - Wk 2
• Grand Valley State sophomore linebacker Abe Swanson was named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance vs. CSU-Pueblo. Swanson led the GVSU defense with a career-high nine tackles, while also recording 1.5 TFL (-5) and a QB sack (-1). 

GLIAC SPECIAL TEAMS POW - Wk 2
• Grand Valley State senior wide receiver Juwan Johnson was named the GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week. Johnson returned his first punt as a Laker 80 yards for a touchdown and caught three passes for 32 yards and touchdown to give the Lakers a 28-7 halftime lead. The punt return for a TD was the first for GVSU since Nick Dodson returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown at Saginaw Valley State in 2018. All three of Johnson's receptions resulted in either a TD or first down.

• Punter Josh Gorball is averaging 40.1 yards per punt and has placed three inside the opponents 20 yard line.
