The Grand Valley State women's volleyball team defeated the Michigan Tech Huskies on their home floor on Friday night. This conference victory brings the Lakers to a four-game winning streak as they head to Marquette to face Northern Michigan tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 18.
The Lakers took the Huskies into five close sets. After winning the first set 25-21, GVSU wasn't able to take the advantage in set two and fell to Michigan Tech 18-25. Tied up at 22-22 in the third set, a kill by senior Abby Graham and two kills by junior Sarah Wight won it for the Lakers.
After scoring the first point of the fourth set, Grand Valley State never took the lead again that set and fell 19-25. Going into the fifth and final set, the Lakers trailed at the start, but tied it up at 8-8. Kills from junior Jaelianna Primus, Abby Graham, and Sarah Wight cinched the conference victory for the Lakers.
Abby Graham led the Lakers tonight with 18 kills and 16 digs, followed by senior Ali Thompson with 16 kills and 20 digs. Sarah Wight finished with 11 kills and three blocks. Junior setter Rachel Jacquay dished out 61 assists and junior libero Erin O'Leary tallied 16 digs.
"I am so happy and excited for our team," said head coach Jason Johnson. "They went into a tough environment against a very talented, experienced, and well-coached team and found a way to win. I am so impressed with the toughness they displayed to win their first five set match of the year."
The Lakers are back in action tomorrow, Sept. 18, at 4:00 p.m. in Marquette, Mich. against Northern Michigan.
