The Grand Valley State volleyball team swept the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Saturday, Sept. 18. After defeating Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan, the Lakers advance to 2-0 in the GLIAC and sit in first place in the South Division. This is the first time since 2015 that the Lakers have swept the Wildcats and the Huskies on the road on back-to-back days.
"We went into another tough environment and had great emotional focus and discipline," said head coach Jason Johnson. "I love how much fun this team has together. While I understand that winning is fun, the ability our team has to bring fun into a difficult environment is something special. It is great watching them grow as a team and gain confidence each match."
The Lakers led the entirety of set one, defeating the Wildcats 25-22. After tying it up 8-8 in the second, the Lakers were able to pull away to win set two 25-16. For the sweep, the Lakers defeated Northern Michigan 25-18 in set three.
The Lakes finished the match with 45 kills and hitting percentage of 0.425, while the WIldcats finished with 31 kills and hitting percentage of 0.181. GVSU also tallied 32 digs and 15 blocks.
Junior Sarah Wight led the Lakers with 11 kills and five blocks. Followed by seniors Abby Graham and Ali Thompson, who tallied 11 kills and 10 kills respectively. Junior setter Rachel Jacquay finished with 37 assists.
Grand Valley State Volleyball is back in action on Thursday, Sept. 23, at Ferris State at 7:00 p.m.
