GVSU Baseball splits doubleheader at Davenport

The Lakers and Panthers will play the final game of the series tomorrow at noon

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Grand Valley State baseball team split a doubleheader at Davenport on Saturday, winning game one, 7-6, before falling 5-2 in game two against the Panthers. The Lakers move to 13-12 overall and 9-6 in GLIAC play, while Davenport is now 17-14 overall and 10-9 in league play. GVSU will have a chance to win the series tomorrow at noon.
 
Game 1: W, 7-6
 
After three scoreless innings, Davenport broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth, but the Lakers answered right back in the top of the fifth. Connor Schuman roped a single to left field, scoring Kyle Nott and tying the game at 1-1. The Lakers carried that momentum into the sixth inning as Jake Rydquist walked and Ryan Blake-Jones singled to lead off the inning. The following batter, Joe Laudont singled through the left side to score Ryquist and give the Lakers their first lead of the day at 2-1. Nott knocked in two more runs and the Lakers led 4-1 after the sixth.
 
GVSU tact on two more insurance runs in the seventh inning as Carter Smith doubled and scored on a wild pitch and Laudont tripled to score Blake-Jones. Davenport would mount a comeback in the seventh inning, plating five runs to force extra innings in the seven-inning contest. In the ninth inning, Smith walked to lead off the inning and was then sacrificed over to second base by Parker Murdie. Rydquist stepped up next and lined a single to right field to score Smith and give the Lakers the lead back at 7-6. Jared Skubic shutdown the Panthers 1-2-3 in the ninth inning to give GVSU the win.
 
Blake-Jones led the Lakers with three hits, while Rydquist, Laudont, and Nott each had multi-hit games.
 
Starting pitcher Mark Scannell received a no-decision, throwing 6 innings, while allowing nine hits and three runs. Skubic, who earned the save yesterday and has now thrown 15 1/3 straight scoreless innings , pitched three innings in relief without allowing a run to earn the win.
 
Game 2: L, 5-2
 
GVSU jumped on the board early in the first inning as Smith led the game off with a triple and scored on an RBI groundout by Murdie. Davenport answered right back in the first inning and the score would remain tied at 1-1 until the fifth inning. The Panthers scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to increase their lead to 5-1. Down to their last at-bats, GVSU scored a run on an RBI groundout by Smith.
 
Austin Brown was tagged with loss, throwing 4 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, three runs, and struck out two. Cade Cintorino and Nathan Wargolet threw the final 1 2/3 innings in relief.
 
 Blake-Jones and Laudont each tallied two hits for the second consecutive game.
