CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Grand Valley State baseball team dropped the series finale at Davenport on Sunday by a score of 12-8. GVSU falls to 13-13 overall and 9-7 in GLIAC play, while Davenport improves to 18-14 overall and 11-9 in league play.
Davenport got on the board first, scoring two runs in the opening frame, but the Lakers quickly answered back in the second.
Christian Faust ripped a ball to center for a run-scoring triple and Cocco recorded an RBI groundout the following at-bat to score Faust. The Panthers scored four runs in the bottom half to take a 6-2 lead, however GVSU responded with three runs in the third on a Laudont two-run single and a Faust double to score
Jake Rydquist. Davenport tact on two more runs in the bottom half and increased their lead to 8-5.
After 13 combined runs through three innings of play, neither team scored the next three innings. Trailing 8-5, the Lakers cut the deficit in the seventh inning on a two-run single by
Anthony Cocco. Davenport once again responded and scored four runs in the bottom half to open up a 12-7 lead.
Faust had team-high three hits including a triple and double while knocking in two runs.
Carter Smith and
Parker Murdie each recorded multi-hit games and Cocco drove in three runs.
Ben Thomas was tagged with the loss, while
Nick Shaw,
Michael Barno,
Nathan Wargolet, and
Sam Leck all threw out of the bullpen for the Lakers.
GVSU will be back in action at home next weekend to open up a four-game series with the Ashland Eagles.
