PREVIEW: GVSU hosts Michigan Tech in GLIAC Quarterfinal Tuesday

Lakers will play for just the second time in April

04.26.2021

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State women's soccer team is set to host the Michigan Tech Huskies in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament Tuesday (April 27) at 4:00 PM at the GVSU Soccer Field. The Lakers, who had the most games of any GLIAC team canceled this season, are the 4-seed at 3-1-1 while the Huskies are the 5-seed at 5-3-1.

The Lakers are coming off a tough result in which they returned from a COVID-19 related pause and were missing several key players in a 2-1 home loss to Ashland. The Lakers scored late and had what appeared to be a hand ball by a position player in the final minutes, but the whistle did not blow and the Lakers couldn't equalize.

That match was the only one played out of the final five scheduled for GVSU in the regular season. The Lakers scored 26 goals in just five matches played, the most by any GLIAC team despite no other teams in the conference missing more than one scheduled match.

The Lakers and Huskies played to a 2-2 draw in the second match of the season, with Tech finding the equalizer in the final minute of regulation off a set piece. The Huskies have scored 16 goals this season, led by Jesse Jacobusse's five. Grace Shaw and Haley Ruiter each have four and Brooke Schauer leads the team with five assists. Shaw also has four assists to lead the team with 12 points. Erika Gabriel and Amanda Young have split time at keeper with Gabriel going 4-1 as a starter with a 0.73 goals-against average.

"We are excited for the opportunity to compete again and get a taste of post-season play," said GVSU head coach Jeff Hosler. "The GLIAC Tournament is a unique opportunity because Ferris, Northwood, Davenport and SVSU haven't seen us this season and we have a chance to show marked improvement against Tech from our earlier match. This has been a difficult year and season full of repeated adversity, but this is another chance to show that we can overcome what's beyond our control and give our best effort for 90 minutes to earn a chance to continue our season."

The Lakers begin their quest for a 14th consecutive GLIAC Tournament title Tuesday. Having played just once since March 28, there is no room for rust in the do-or-die showdown with the Huskies. Limited attendance is allowed and fans can also watch the match live on the Grand Valley Sports Network or follow @GVSUSoccer for live coverage links and in-game updates.
