No. 14 softball sweeps Ferris State on the road Wednesday

Lakers win game one, 2-0, then game two 6-3

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 14 Grand Valley State Lakers swept the Ferris State Bulldogs Wednesday (April 14) with wins by a count of 2-0 in game one then 6-3 in game two. The Lakers have now won all four regular season meetings with FSU this season and improve to 25-5 overall and 16-2 in GLIAC play.

The Lakers outlasted Ferris in a pitchers' duel in the opener. An RBI-walk by Morgan Wagner and a Nikoma Holmen RBI single were the only flashes of offense for either side. Hannah Beatus (W, 11-2) was once again outstanding in the circle, scattering five hits and a couple walks while striking out nine to improve to 8-0 in GLIAC play.

The Bulldogs jumped on GVSU early in game two with a pair of runs in the first on back-to-back bases loaded walks. The Lakers would get one back on a Bailey Thatcher single in the second but Ferris answered to carry a 3-1 lead after two. A two-run hit by Holmen and RBI knock by Wagner in the third put the Lakers in front for good. Wagner would come through with yet another RBI hit in the fifth for some breathing room and a two-out double from Holmen in the seventh chased home Lydia Goble to round out the scoring.

Genesis Eggart (W, 5-0) bounced back from a rocky start to hurl five straight scoreless innings to end the game with a complete-game win. She allowed three runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out three.

The Lakers went 7-1 on their eight-game road trip and finally are back on their home field this Saturday (April 17) at 1:00 PM when they host the Northwood Timberwolves for a doubleheader. The games will air on the Grand Valley Sports Network and GVSULakers.com and @GVSUSoftball will provide updates.
