ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State baseball team increased their winning streak to five games after a 17-0 win over Spring Arbor on Tuesday afternoon at the GVSU Baseball Field. The Lakers improve to 8-6 on the year, while Spring Arbor falls to 12-14.
The Lakers began the scoring onslaught in the second inning, plating four runs on four hits, highlighted by
Parker Murdie's RBI double.
Carter Smith also drove in a run to increase the lead to 4-0. After being held scoreless in the third, GVSU scored five runs in the fourth, seven runs in the fifth, and one more in the sixth to lead 17-0.
Smith and
Anthony Cocco led the Lakers with four hits each, while
Jonathan Catapano entered the game and launched a three-run homer to left field.
Cade Stanton (3 hits), Catapano (2 hits), and Murdie (2 hits) also each had multi-hit games for GVSU.
Jared Skubic (1-0) earned the win by tossing three scoreless innings.
Luke Hargis,
Zach Karbowski,
Joseph Huesing,
Anthony Zurke, and
Nathan Wargolet combined in relief to complete the shutout.
The GLIAC-leading Lakers will travel to Northwood to play a four-game series with the Timberwolves beginning on Thursday afternoon (April 1)
