No. 9 GVSU falls at the buzzer to No. 19 Michigan Tech

The Lakers will look to bounce back tomorrow

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 9 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team fell at the buzzer to No. 19 Michigan Tech, 54-52, on Saturday afternoon at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Huskies improve to 14-1 on the season, while the Lakers drop to 13-2. The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 2:00 PM. 
 
The game was tied at 52-52 when Michigan Tech's Ellie Mackay knocked down a jump shot as time expired. The Lakers led 51-42 with 2:46 remaining before the Huskies finished the game on a 12-1 run.
 
Freshman Rylie Bisballe led GVSU with with 17 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks, while senior Qay Stanton also finished in double-figures with 10 points. Junior Emily Spitzley scored seven points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. As a team, GVSU shot just 30.2% from the field, while MTU finished with a 42.3% shooting percentage.
 
GVSU scored the first seven points of the game and led 10-2 with 6:26 left in the first quarter before MTU went on a 9-0 run to take the lead at 11-10. Stanton made a jump shot in the final seconds of the quarter and GVSU took a 12-11 advantage into the second quarter. The two teams traded baskets in the second quarter with no team leading by more than three points. GVSU led 23-22 at the half.
 
The game remained close in the second half with the Lakers leading 39-36 entering the fourth quarter. GVSU looked to pull away as they went on an 8-0 run to go up 51-40 with 3:04 remaining, but MTU held the Lakers without a field goal for the remainder of the game.
