MARQUETTE, Mich. – The No. 11 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team defeated Northern Michigan on Saturday, 61-34, at the PEIF Practice Gym. The Lakers move their win streak to seven games and their record to 11-1. NMU falls to 7-5 on the year.
Freshman
Rylie Bisballe led the Lakers with 16 points (7-10 FG) and five rebounds, while fellow classmate
Ellie Droste also finished in double-figures with 12 points. Juniors
Hannah Kulas and
Samantha Gehrls each scored eight points. As a team, the Lakers forced 21 NMU turnovers and the GVSU bench outscored the Wildcats bench, 35-8.
After only two baskets made in the first five minutes of the contest, GVSU went on a 9-2 run to build an early lead. The Lakers led 16-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Brooke McKinley knocked down a three-pointer to start the second quarter and a pair of baskets by
Ellie Droste and Bisballe gave the Lakers a 23-9 lead. The margin increased to 33-13 with 3:32 left in the half before Northern Michigan ended the quarter on a 7-2 run. GVSU led 35-20 at the break.
The Lakers continued to build their lead early in the second half as they held NMU to just six points in the third quarter. GVSU would lead 48-26 entering the fourth quarter and would lead by a game-high 27 points in the final minutes of the contest.
