ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 13 Grand Valley State Lakers rebound with a 70-63 win over the Wayne State Warriors Saturday (Dec. 4) at the GVSU Fieldhouse. The Lakers erase a 12-point second-half deficit to improve to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in GLIAC play.
Trailing by 10 at the half after a 6-0 Warrior run, GVSU would continue to hang around for much of the second half. Then, the Lakers made their move, going on an 11-0 run midway through the second half to turn a five-point deficit into a six-point lead with four minutes left and would hold on for the win.
Jake Van Tubbergen recorded his sixth double-double in seven games with 14 points, 13 rebounds and a block.
Jordan Harris put up 21 points, going 8-9 from the free throw line, and
Christian Negron had eight points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. The Lakers shot just 27% from the floor in the first half but bounced back to go 15-30 from the floor in the second.
Trevon Gunter and
Luke Toliver combined for 15 points off the bench, mostly in the first half, to keep the Lakers in the game before the comeback.
Ja'Kavien Lewis added nine points, three assists and a pair of steals – most of which came after halftime – to provide a huge lift off the bench.
The Lakers travel west next weekend for the second and final GLIAC weekend of the 2021 portion of the season. They'll take on Purdue Northwest at 8 PM ET (7 CT) at John Friend Court in Hammond, Indiana on Thursday (Dec. 9).
