#7 GVSU Hits The Road For A GLIAC Tilt At Wayne State

#7 Grand Valley State will hit the road for a GLIAC road matchup at Wayne State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Tom Adams Field. The Lakers are third in the latest NCAA DII Super Region 3 rankings. 

THE SERIES
Grand Valley State leads the all-time series by a 35-6 margin, however, after 30 straight wins in the series WSU won the most recent meeting in 2019 by a 31-17 margin. GVSU is 17-3 at Lubbers Stadium and 18-3 at Wayne State. The average margin of victory in the 30-game Laker winning streak was 38.7-13.8 and GVSU scored 40 or more points 11 times and held WSU to 10 points or less 11 times. Prior to the win in 2019, WSU's last win in the series was in 1984 (30-3). GVSU's last trip to Adams was a 45-27 victory for the Lakers.

• Grand Valley State is the winningest FBS, FCS and Division II program in the country, boasting a record of 416-147-3 (.738) in 49 years of playing football. In addition, GVSU is also the winningest GLIAC program all-time with a 300-77-3 mark (.793).

• GVSU leads the nation in attendance once again. The Lakers have drawn 62,043 in five home dates (12,409). The Lakers led the nation in attendance for the 8th consecutive year in 2019. Lubbers Stadium drew 68,746 fans in seven home dates for an average of 9,820. The total and average led NCAA DII.

LAST WEEK
#7 Grand Valley State built a 14-0 lead over Michigan Tech midway through the second quarter and held on for a 14-9 victory. GVSU dominated the game defensively, holding the Huskies to 274 yards of total offense, including 94 on the ground. Sophomore DB Ian Kennelly was named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week after recording two tackles, picking off a pass, forcing a fumble and recovering a fumble. QB Cade Peterson passed for 181 yards and two TDs, while rushing for a team-high 56 yards, including a key 27-yard run in the final four minutes. WR Jacob Miller and TE Scott Cooper each caught a TD pass.

• The Laker defense ranks second in the GLIAC and ranks 20th nationally in total defense per game 283.8. 

• GVSU ranks second in the GLIAC and 37th nationally in total offense, averaging 423.0 yards per game. 

• GVSU ranks second in the GLIAC and ranks 14th nationally in rushing yards per game,  averaging 223.9 yards per game...The Lakers are averaging 6.1 yards per carry and have rushed for 22 TDs in eight games. Five Lakers have for at least two TDs, with Tariq Reid and Aryuan Cain-Veasey leading the way with five each.

• The Lakers ranked 22nd nationally and lead the GLIAC in rushing defense per game (98.0 ypg). The GVSU defense has yielded just three rushing TDs in eight games. Opponents have rushed for 784 yards.

 • The GVSU defense has forced its opponents into 31 three-and-out possessions and 62-of-71 total possessions that have not resulted in points have consisted of six plays or less. 38 drives have consisted of 10 yards or less. 

• 17 different Laker receivers have caught a pass, while 10 different players have caught a TD pass.

• GVSU rushed for 640 yards and 10 TDs versus UW-La Crosse and Michigan Tech. The Lakers rushed for 320 yards and four TDs vs. UWC, followed by a 320-yard, six-TD rushing game at MTU. 

• The Lakers are yielding 98.0 yards per game rushing, 3.0 yards per carry and opponents have three rushing TDs in eight games. The Laker defense limited CSU-Pueblo to 29 rushing yards on 20 attempts (1.5 ypr), Michigan Tech to 82 yards on 31 carries (2.6 ypc), Northwood to 95 yards on 34 carries and Michigan Tech in game two to 94 yards on 29 carries. 

• GVSU ranks second in the GLIAC and 38th nationally in third down percentage defense .318 (35-for-110).

• The Lakers rank second in the GLIAC and 21st nationally third down conversion at .474 (36-for-76). GVSU is converting .581 percent (25-for-43) of its 3rd down attempts in the first half, while opponents are converting .290 percent (16-for-55). 

• GVSU has recorded 20 drives that consisted of eight plays or more that have resulted in points. All total, the Lakers have scored on 40-of-83 drives (.481) this season. 

• GVSU has produced 62 explosive plays (20 yards or more) this season, including 18 via rush, 24 via pass. 

• GVSU has converted 27-of-31 red zone opportunities, including 25 TDs and two FGs. 

• The GVSU defense recorded 53 tackles for loss (-176), 14 QB sacks (-73), 75 QB hurries, 35 pass deflections, recovered 8 fumbles and picked off six passes.  

• Twenty-two different defenders have recorded a tackle for loss, including a team-high 7.0 (-21) by Jake Hlava, 6.0 by Abe Swanson (-34) and 5.5 by Colton Hyble (-15) and . 

• Grand Valley State true freshman kicker Kollin Kralapp converted 20-of-20 PATs in his first four collegiate football games. 

• The group of QB Cade Peterson (63-466-4); Tariq Reid (77-428-5); Bryce Young-Walls 50-335-4) and Aryuan Cain-Veasey (52-328-5) have rushed for a combined 1,557 yards and 22 TDs on 242 carries (6.4ypc).
