The Grand Valley State women's basketball team defeated Rollins College in a 70-39 victory on Friday, Nov. 26. After their 31 point victory today, the Lakers are now 4-0 on the season.
Shooting 67% percent in the first quarter, the Lakers were able to take the lead early and obtain a 26-5 lead at the end of the first. Senior Emily Spitzley and sophomore Ellie Droste led the Lakers with seven points a piece in the first. Defensively, the Lakers came out strong in the first half forcing nine turnovers and holding Rollins to just three baskets. Rollins shot 11% percent compared to GVSU's 48%. GVSU led 39-11 heading into the second half.
In the second half, the Lakers were able to extend their lead from 28 points to 32 points in the first minute of play. Grand Valley State shot 50% from three in the third quarter, led by Spitzley who was now 3-5 from three on the game. After two made free throws from sophomore Joslyn Brennan, the Lakers had a 31 point advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Despite being outscored in the fourth 19-17, GVSU outscored Rollins 31-28 in the second. The Lakers were led by freshman Abrie Cabana in the fourth quarter, scoring five points and grabbing a steal in 10 minutes of play.
The Lakers shot 44% from the floor, 35% from three, and just 62% from the free throw line. Emily Spitzley lead the Lakers with 19 points and three rebounds, followed by senior Qay Stanton who finished with 10 points and seven boards. Sophomore Ellie Droste also chipped in seven points and five boards for the Lakers.
Grand Valley State is back in action tomorrow in day two of the Rollins Classic. The Lakers will play Embry-Riddle with tip-off set 4:00 p.m.
