The Grand Valley State women's basketball team is now 5-0 on the season after defeating Embry-Riddle University 67-47 on Saturday, Nov. 27. GVSU leaves Winter Park, Fla. with an undefeated performance in the Rollins Classic Tournament.
After leading almost the entirety of the first quarter, the Lakers gave themselves an 18-11 point advantage heading into the second period. While GVSU was able to force 14 Eagle turnovers in the first half, the Lakers also scored 10 of their 30 points off turnovers. The Eagles closed out the second quarter with a 7-0 run, giving Grand Valley State just a three point advantage heading into the third quarter.
While the Lakers started the second half with a 30-27 point lead, they were able to extend their lead to 10 in the first three minutes of the quarter. GVSU shot 60% from the floor and 50% from three in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 25-9. The Lakers were able to score another 12 points off of Eagle turnovers in the second half and six fast break points, which led to a 20 point victory over Embry-Riddle.
Grand Valley State finished the game shooting 39% from the floor, 31% from three, and 67% from the free throw line. The Lakers were led by sophomore Ellie Droste with 17 points, followed by sophomore Rylie Bisballe who finished with 13 points, five rebounds, and went 5-5 from the foul line. Senior Hannah Kulas also tallied 12 points and eight rebounds for the Lakers.
The Lakers are back in action on Thursday, Dec. 2 at home in their conference opener against Saginaw Valley State. Tip off is set for 6:00 p.m.
