The Grand Valley State women's volleyball team fell to the Davenport Panthers on Wednesday, Nov. 17 in the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals. The Lakers fall to 17-9 on the season.
GVSU trailed the Panthers early in set one, but tied it up at 7-7 and eventually took the lead 13-10. Ali Thompson led all attackers in set one with six kills, helping lead the Lakers to a 25-17 set one victory. After a similar start to set two, the Lakers came back to tie the set up at 11-11 after trailing DU. Despite Thompson's nine kills in set two, GVSU couldn't pull away after coming back to tie it up 25-25 and fell to the Panthers 27-25. The Panthers took the advantage heading into set four after winning another close set in the third, 25-23.
The Lakers came out strong in set four, taking the lead 12-10. The Panthers and Lakers went point for point while the Lakers maintained their two point lead at 20-18. DU went on a four point run to take the advantage 22-20. After kills from Jayla Wesley, Ali Thompson, and Sarah Wight, GVSU and DU were tied at 23 all. The teams exchanged missed serves, making it 24-24. The Panthers and Lakers exchanged points until Grand Valley State took the lead 29-28, but after three consecutive points from DU, the Lakers fell 31-29 in the fourth and final set.
The Lakers were led by senior Ali Thompson with 24 kills, a .308 kill percentage, nine digs, and two blocks. Junior Sarah Wight finished with 13 kills, a .367 kill percentage, and two blocks. Senior Abby Graham, senior Jayla Wesley, and junior Jaelianna Primus each tallied nine kills a piece. Libero Julia Blaney finished with 26 digs and junior setter Rachel Jacquay dished out 53 assists to the Lakers.
