The Grand Valley State women's basketball team defeated Maryville University 62-32 on Saturday, Nov.13 at home. GVSU extends their record to 2-0 after their 30 point win today.
The Lakers' defensive efforts in the first quarter set the tone for them defensively the rest of the game. GVSU held the Saints to just five points in the first quarter, giving Grand Valley a 13-5 advantage heading into the second quarter. Sophomore Rylie Bisballe led all players in scoring and rebounding with five points and six rebounds to finish the first. Shooting 46% in the first half, GVSU put up 30 points by halftime with a third of those coming from senior Hannah Kulas. Kulas finished the half with 10 points, going 2-3 from behind the arc.
The Lakers came out strong defensively again in the second half, grabbing 10 steals and holding Maryville to just seven points in the third quarter. GVSU dominated the boards with 17 rebounds in the third, including six offensive boards. The Lakers were able to extend their lead to 48-21 to end the third. GVSU won the fourth quarter, outscoring the Saints 14-11. Sophomore Joslyn Brennan led the Lakers in the fourth with five points and four rebounds.
The Lakers shot 39% from the floor, 32% from three, and 75% from the free throw line tonight. Of the Lakers' 62 points, 28 came from inside the paint while their 16 offensive rebounds resulting in 11 second-chance points for GVSU. GVSU was able to capitalize on their 17 total steals and score 18 points off of the Saints' turnovers tonight.
Hannah Kulas led all scorers with 24 points, going 4-5 from three. Rylie Bisballe finished with eight points, nine rebounds, and two steals, followed by junior Haley Swing who finished with eight points and three rebounds.
The Lakers are back in action on Sunday, Nov. 21 at Findlay. Tip off set for 1:00 p.m.
