The Grand Valley State women's basketball team defeated the University of Findlay on Sunday, Nov. 21 in a 16 point victory. The Lakers won 77-61 and are now 3-0 on the 2021-22 season.
GVSU was off to a slow offensive start at Findlay, shooting just 29% from the floor, but made up for it at the other end of the floor. The Lakers held Findlay to just eight points while also forcing the Oilers to turn the ball over eight times in the first quarter. GVSU led at the end of the first 15-8. The Lakers had a strong second quarter, shooting 50% from three, 41% from the floor, and going 7-8 from the free-throw line. This gave Grand Valley State a 38-27 advantage going into the second half.
After a three from senior Qay Stanton, a layup from sophomore Ellie Droste, and a fast break basket from senior Hannah Kulas to start the half, the Lakers were really starting to get going offensively. The Lakers went on a 15-4 point run in the first five minutes of the third quarter to give them a 22 point lead over the Oilers. The Laker defense continued to wreak havoc for the Oilers as GVSU forced another 10 turnovers in the third quarter. The Lakers finished the second half shooting 43% from the floor and 42% from three. GVSU scored 39 points in the second half with 24 of those points coming from behind the arc.
The Lakers finished the game shooting 39% from the floor and from three, making a season-high 13 three's in today's matchup. Grand Valley State won the rebound battle 30-28 and grabbed 18 offensive boards which resulted in 12 second-chance points for the Lakers. The Lakers forced the Oilers to turn the ball over 27 times, allowing GVSU to score 30 points off of their turnovers.
Senior Qay Stanton led the Lakers with a double-double, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Hannah Kulas also finished with 16 points, going a perfect 6-6 from the foul line. Sophomore Rylie Bisballe tallied 11 points and five boards for the Lakers, followed by senior Emily Spitzley and sophomore Ellie Droste who also chipped in eight points a piece.
The Lakers are back in action in the Rollins Classic Tournament in Winter Park Florida on Friday, Nov. 26 against Rollins College and Saturday, Nov. 27 against Embry-Riddle University.
