The Lakers finished out the second day of the Midwest Crossover Tournament with a victory over the University of Southern Indiana. The Grand Valley State volleyball team advances to 12-7 this season.
After trailing the Eagles in set one, the Lakers were able to come back from a 3-9 deficit and tie up the set at 11-11. GVSU pulled away to win the set 25-21. While the Lakers took an early lead of 7-4 to start set two, the Eagles came back to win the second set 26-24. Tied up at 1-1, the Lakers took the advantage after winning set three 25-20. After trailing 8-12 in set four, the Lakers came back to make it 20-20 all. Two service aces from junior Julia Blaney and a kill from junior Sarah Wight helped cinch the 25-22 win for the Lakers.
Senior Ali Thompson recorded a season-high 19 kills and also tallied 14 digs. Senior Jayla Wesley totaled 12 kills and a season-high five blocks. Sarah Wight also finished with 12 kills, followed by senior Abby Graham who tallied 10 kills and 21 digs. Junior Lisa Sullivan totaled 10 kills and three blocks. Junior setter Rachel Jacquay dished out 54 assists for the Lakers.
GVSU resumes GLIAC action at home this Friday, Oct. 22 against Lake Superior State at 7:00 p.m.
