GVSU Volleyball Defeats Lake State Superior

Lakers Sweep LSSU in Dig Pink Match

The Grand Valley State volleyball team defeated the Lake Superior State Lakers on Friday, Oct. 22, in three sets. The GVSU Lakers advance to 6-3 in GLIAC play, 13-7 overall, and extend their winning streak to four matches.

Both Lakers were stringing together rallies in set one, making it tough for Grand Valley State to pull away. After being tied up at 23-23, two Ali Thompson kills gave the Lakers a win in the first set 25-23. Coming out strong in set two, GVSU was able to gain a comfortable lead and won set two 25-14. In set three, LSSU took the lead early with a 3-1 advantage. After tying it up at 4-4, Grand Valley State obtained a 24-18 lead to try and close out the set. Lake Superior State was able to rally back 24-22, but GVSU was able to put set three away after a kill from senior Abby Graham.

Grand Valley State finished with 42 kills (.180 kill percentage), 59 digs, and 13 blocks. Senior Ali Thompson led the Lakers with 12 kills, a .333 kill percentage, three blocks, and 15 digs. Abby Graham and junior Sarah Wight each tallied nine kills a piece, and Graham also finished with 13 digs. Junior Setter Rachel Jacquay totaled 31 assists and seven digs, while freshman Julia Blaney also tallied seven digs.

The Lakers will be back in action at home next weekend on Friday, Oct. 29 against Ferris State and on Saturday, Oct. 30, against Davenport University.
