The Grand Valley State women's volleyball team fell to Wayne State on Sunday, Oct. 10. The Lakers are now 5-3 in the GLIAC and 9-7 overall. After today's loss, GVSU dropped to second in the GLIAC South Division behind the Ferris State Bulldogs (6-2).
The Lakers had a lead early in set one, but struggled to pull away from the Warriors. After tying it up 11-11, the Lakers weren't able to obtain the lead again and fell 25-22 in the first set. In set two, the Lakers were down 4-6 until senior Abby Graham was able to string six consecutive serves together to take the lead 10-6. Grand Valley State led the remainder of the set and won 25-17. Unfortunately, the Lakers were unable to carry enough of that momentum into set three and fell 23-25. Behind 7-2 at the beginning of set four, GVSU's late efforts weren't enough to take the lead and the Lakers fell in the final set 17-25.
The Lakers finished the match with 56 kills (.226 hitting percentage), 50 assists, 66 digs, and four blocks. Senior Ali Thompson led the Lakers with 17 kills, 17 digs, two aces, and one block. Junior Sarah Wight tallied 15 kills, followed by Abby Graham with seven kills. Junior Erin O'Leary also totaled 19 digs and junior setter Rachel Jacquay dished out 47 assists.
The Lakers are back in action on Friday and Saturday in the Midwest Region Crossover Tournament.
