Lakers End First Day of Midwest Region Crossover Tournament with Two Sweeps

GVSU Defeated Ohio Dominican and the University of Indianapolis

The Grand Valley State volleyball team finished the first day of the Midwest Region Crossover Tournament with two victories over Ohio Dominican and the University of Indianapolis. The Lakers advance to 11-7 on the season. 

In the first match of the day, GVSU matched up with the Ohio Dominican Panthers. The Lakers defeated ODU in the first set 25-16. GVSU started set two with a quick 5-0 lead and were able to take home their second set of the day 25-13. To complete the sweep, the Lakers defeated the Panthers in the third and final set 25-12. 

The seniors led the way for the Lakers in the first match of the tournament. Senior Jayla Wesley led the Lakers with nine kills and a .750 kill percentage. Senior Abby Graham also tallied nine kills and 11 digs, followed by senior Ali Thompson who finished with eight kills and 14 digs. Junior Sarah Wight also finished with eight kills and a .412 kill percentage. 

In the second match of the day, the Lakers faced the University of Indianapolis. The Greyhounds fell to GVSU in set one 25-16. In set two, the Lakers were led by Sarah Wight, Abby Graham, and Lisa Sullivan who each tallied four kills a piece in the set. They helped lead the Lakers to a set two victory, 25-7. GVSU led the entirety of the final set and defeated the Greyhounds 25-22. 

Abby Graham led the match with 11 kills, nine digs, two blocks, and two service aces. Sarah Wight tallied nine kills and three blocks, followed by Lisa Sullivan who finished with eight kills and three blocks. 

The Lakers are back in action tomorrow against the University of Southern Indiana at 1:45 p.m.
