GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Valley State women's basketball team used a big fourth quarter to take down Davenport, 77-60, on Tuesday night from the DU Student Center. The Lakers improve to 6-1 overall and Davenport falls to 2-5.
Four different Lakers finished in double-figures with freshman
Ellie Droste leading the way with 17 points, 5 rebounds, and four assists. Junior
Emily Spitzley recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while
Brooke McKinley and
Samantha Gehrls scored 11 and 10 points respectively. As a team, GVSU shot 16-20 (80%) at the charity stripe and a season-high 27-55 (49.1%) from the field.
The Lakers jumped on Davenport early, gaining a 14-5 lead through the first five minutes of play and increased the lead to 23-9 at the end of the frame. The two teams traded baskets early in the second quarter before the Panthers chipped away at the deficit, trimming the Laker lead to 29-23. McKinley knocked down a three-pointer late in the half and GVSU brought a 34-25 lead into the break.
Davenport opened the second half making their first four shots and quickly cut the score to 39-36. The Lakers were able to increase their lead back to seven points at 53-46 with 1:29 left in the third quarter, but the Panthers knocked down a pair of shots to end the quarter. GVSU led 53-50 entering the fourth. The final quarter was all Lakers. Davenport kept the margin close for the first few minutes of the final frame, however the Lakers ended the final 5:31 on a 16-3 run to capture the win.
GVSU will travel to Wayne State for a pair of games beginning on Saturday at 2:00 PM.
