ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State track and field teams lead the 2020 GLIAC Indoor Championships after Day 1 of competition. The women hold a dominant 100.50 points while the men retain a steady 13-point lead with a total of 49.
The women collected a handful of podium finishes to amount for their 63 point lead.
Hanna Groeber claimed the 5000m title with a finish of 16:52.51, more than 13 seconds before the next finisher. In the 60m and 200m dashes,
Nicole Sreenan (7.45; 23.94) and
Angelica Floyd (7.60; 25.04) qualified with the top times in their heats. Sreenan posted two NCAA DII automatic qualifying times while Floyd earned a provisional qualification in the 60m.
Jessica Eby (57.19) and
Sarah Beulla (58.44) punched their tickets for the 400m finals with qualifying preliminary times, while freshman
Brittany Rainey earned a qualification with a 9.03 second finish in the 60m hurdles. The women's distance medley relay of
Abby Crouch,
Abbey Clasen,
Molly McLaughlin and
Camryn Gabriel collected a bronze medal with a time of 11:54.94, good for a provisional qualification.
After taking second place in last year's GLIAC Indoor Championships, senior
Bobbie Goodwin collected a redemptive first-place finish in the weight throw with a launch of 20.88m. Sophomores
Franesha Robinson-Mitchell (18.93m) and
Judith Essemiah (18.68m) threw for NCAA provisional marks. The Laker women swept the pole vault competition with two-time GLIAC Indoor Champion,
Elli Kimes, clearing a personal best and automatic qualification of 4.21m.
Carly Livingston (3.95m) and
Kassidie Stimmel (3.80m) collected second and third places, respectively. Earning a silver medal in the long jump was
Angelica Floyd with a leap of 5.68m.
Freshman
Brendan Parr posted a personal best and provisional qualification in the 5000m, as he defeated the competition in 14:22.47. The GVSU trio of
Tyler Kirkwood (8.23),
Tyler Mansfield (8.20) and
Thomas Moreman (8.53) qualified for tomorrow's 60m hurdle finals. In the 60m dash,
Emmanuel Arop and
Max Darling crossed the line in 6.88 and 6.96 seconds, respectively, earning spots in the finals.
Also competing in tomorrow's finals will be
Andrew McFarland (48.60) and
Daniel Walker (48.72) after taking second and third in the 400m prelims. The men's distance medley relay team comprised of
John Groendyk,
Matt McLaughlin,
Tyler Walters and
Dennis Mbuta finished in 9:55.37, claiming first place.
Reigning GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week,
Hunter Harding, received a podium finish for his third-place distance of 19.91m in the weight throw.
Justin Scavarda (18.96m) and
Leon White (18.72m) took the fourth and sixth spots with provisional qualifications.
The Lakers continue conference action tomorrow, March 1, with the men's pentathlon set for 9 a.m.
