AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Grand Valley State baseball team will travel to Florida to begin a stretch in which they will play 12 games in nine days, beginning on Sunday morning (Mar. 1) at 9:00 AM in a doubleheader with Findlay. The Lakers currently boast a record of 2-1 after a series opening win over Ohio Dominican last weekend.
Ohio Dominican added five runs in the eighth inning during the season opener to defeat the Lakers, 10-5, before GVSU would regroup in game two of a doubleheader with a 9-2 win to force a rubber match. On Sunday, the Lakers trailed 2-1 going into the top of the eighth inning when the GVSU bats awoke and pounded out four runs and added two more insurance runs in the ninth to grab a 7-3 win in the final game of the series. Spencer Nelson had a big opening weekend, amassing seven hits and four RBI, while seniors
Ryan Blake-Jones and Nate Bonter each had four hits apiece. On the mound, starter
Rylan Peets earned the win in game two, tossing four innings, yielding two runs on three hits, four walks, and striking out two. In the rubber match,
Mark Scannell was not factored in the decision, but pitched 5.1 innings and only allowed one earned run. Senior
Luke Hargis was credited with the win, throwing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, while junior
Michael Barno earned the save.
