CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team fell in the nightcap at the Queens Fall Classic to Lenoir-Rhyne University in straight sets (21-25, 18-25, 21-25). The Lakers fall to 0-2 to begin the 2019 season.
The Lakers struggled around the net with a .022 % hit percentage for the duration of the match. Lenoir-Rhyne led in kills (33-30), aces (5-3), and assists (32-28), while the two teams tied in points scored at 41.
Freshman
Karlie Kucharczyk led the Lakers with eight kills, while freshman
Jaeli Primus added seven kills. Sophomore
Kaily Grulke and Primus each chipped in four blocks. Senior
Frankie Cavallaro recorded 17 assists and sophomore
Abby Graham had 17 digs.
GVSU trailed the entire first set and were down as many as nine points. After trailing 22-14, the Lakers were able to cut the deficit to just two at 23-21 but two errors costed the set for GVSU.
Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out to a 4-0 lead in set two and led the entire set once again. GVSU got down 19-10 and battled back to 19-14 before the Bears finished the set on a pair of Laker errors.
The Lakers took their first lead of the night early in set three when they went up 5-4. The Bears proceeded with five straight points and took a 9-5 lead. GVSU trailed 20-11 and scored five un-answered points to cut the lead to 20-16, however the Bears finished off the set shortly after.
GVSU will be back in action tomorrow (Sep. 7) against UNC Pembroke at 12:00 P.M.
