GVSU Volleyball falls in GLIAC match with Michigan Tech

The Lakers will be back in action Tuesday, September 24 against Davenport at 7:00 P.M. inside the GVSU Fieldhouse

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team fell in straight sets (23-25, 20-25, 16-25) against a talented Michigan Tech team on Saturday at the GVSU Fieldhouse. The Lakers are now 4-6 overall on the season and 0-2 in GLIAC play.
 
GVSU finished with a .152 attack percentage and were led in kills by redshirt freshman Emma Clines (11), freshman Karlie Kucharczyk (10), and freshman Jaeli Primus (9). Freshman setter Rachel Jacquay tallied 29 assists and senior Kendall Yerkes had 19 digs.
 
Michigan Tech posted a solid .321 attack percentage, while also holding the advantage in kills (49-37), assists (44-33), and digs (61-44).
 
In the first set, Michigan Tech jumped out to a 4-1 lead before GVSU rattled off five straight points to take a 6-4 lead. The two teams would trade points until the Lakers won four consecutive points to go up 15-12. GVSU held leads of 17-14, 18-15, and 19-16, but the Huskies would go on an 8-2 run to retake the lead at 24-21. GVSU trimmed the deficit to 24-23 but lost the following point.
 
No team grasped more than a two-point lead at the beginning of set two. With the set tied at 15-15, Michigan Tech scored four straight points to take control of the set and go up 19-15. The Huskies used a 3-0 run to increase their lead to 24-18 and finished the set after two GVSU points.
 
GVSU came out of the gates hot in set three, going up 6-2, but Michigan Tech would tie the set at 6-6 and eventually take a 13-10 lead. The Lakers hung around and trimmed the deficit to just 16-15 before the Huskies embarked on a 9-1 run to close the match.
 
The Lakers will have a quicker than normal turnaround as they will host Davenport on Tuesday, September 24 at the GVSU Fieldhouse at 7:00 P.M.
