The Grand Valley State women's tennis team defeated Saginaw Valley State, 5-2, at home on Sunday (Sept. 15). The Lakers improve to 2-0 in head coach
Samantha Schall's first season at the helm of the program.
GVSU completed a full sweep against the Cardinals as
Marily Canellopoulos and
Vera Griva defeated the No. 1 doubles pairing, 6-3, followed by
Taylor Barrett and
Marija Leko who took the No. 2 doubles match, 6-2.
Liv Hanover and
Agata Szewczuk completed the Laker doubles sweep with a 6-3 win.
In singles play, Griva won 6-2, 6-3 from the No. 1 spot, Canellopoulos won 6-1, 7-5, as the No. 3 competitor, and Hanover won 6-2, 6-1 from the No. 5 spot. Barrett won in three sets, scoring 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 from the No. 4 spot. Leko was defeated 6-3, 6-7 (7-2), 15-13 in No. 2 singles. Playing from the No. 6 spot was Szewczuk who was defeated 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
The Lakers will compete in the ITA Regional Championships this weekend (Sept. 20-22) in Caledonia, Mich.
