White has second, and Lakers third, title in five years

08.13.2019

MUSKEGON, Mich. – Recent Grand Valley State graduate Mitchell White claimed his second career Golf Association of Michigan (GAM) Championship this week, clinching the victory Tuesday (Aug. 13). White shot rounds of 68, 66 and 66 for a total 16-under 200 across the three-day amateur tournament at Muskegon Country Club, winning the 98th annual GAM Championship by eight strokes over the second-place finisher.

It's the second GAM victory for White in the last five years and third by a Grand Valley State golfer in that span. White won the championship the summer before his freshman season in 2015 while classmate Alex Scott took home the trophy in 2017. White and Scott led the Lakers to an appearance in the NCAA Championships their senior season.

"When Mitchell gets hot, he is a truly elite level player," said head Grand Valley State golf coach Gary Bissell. "He always represents GVSU in a positive way and we are proud to have him as a staple of our program."

White was tied for the lead after an opening round 68, matching 2018 Big Ten Freshman of the Year James Piot (Michigan State), but pulled away from the pack with a day-best 66 in the second round. He kept the field at arm's length with a great showing on the final day, going five-under to outlast Piot (208) and Ian Martin, who shot an eight-under 64 on the final day for a total 209.

White earned DII PING All-Midwest Region honors and second team All-GLIAC his senior year, averaging 73.30 per round. He had five top-10 finishes on the season and broke 70 in four separate rounds. Individually, he tied for 21st in the NCAA DII National Championships with an overall 217.
