GVSU Claims 11-6 Win Over Davenport In Series Finale

Grand Valley State claimed an 11-6 victory over Davenport in the series finale Sunday afternoon at the GVSU Baseball Field. The Lakers improve to 9-19-1 overall and 2-9-1 in GLIAC action, while Davenport falls to 16-11 and 4-7. The Lakers will host Wisconsin-Parkside in a four-game series starting Friday (April 12) at 3 p.m.

Davenport took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first, but the Lakers answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame. SS Parker Murdie singled, advanced to second and third on wild pitches and scored on a 2-out single off the bat of LF Connor Grice. The Panthers added a run in the top of the third, but the Lakers answered again, this time with five runs to take a 6-2 lead. Grice singled, followed by back-to-back walks to C Joe Laudont and 1B Nathan Bonter.  CF Drake Ellens walked to score Grice and 2B Chase Carpenter delivered a key, 2-out single that scored three runs. Carpenter scored later on a wild pitch to up the Laker lead to 6-2. 

GVSU added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 8-2 lead. Murdie walked and advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Grice doubled to score Murdie and Grice would score on a Bonter single to right. Murdie continued his productive day with a leadoff homerun to start the sixth and up the Laker advantage to 9-2. RF Stephen Pim plated Carpenter in the bottom of the seventh with a double to right and Grice concluded the scoring with a sac fly to right to plate Murdie who reached on an error. 

Nick Shaw picked up the first win of his career in a relief role. Shaw yielded just one earned run in 3.1 innings of work with three strikeouts. Michael Morelli got the start and gave up two runs on four hits in 3.0 innings. Murdie was 2-for-4 with four runs scored, while Grice was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Bonter collected a pair of hits and drove in a pair, while Carpenter was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Laudont, Ellens and Pim each contributed to the Laker attack.
