The Grand Valley State women's tennis team defeated Indiana (PA), 6-1, on Saturday (April 6) afternoon and improved to 20-4 on the season, while the Crimson Hawks dropped to 6-6 overall. With the win today, this marks the 15th straight season that the Lakers have won at least 20 matches or more in a season.
GVSU started the match with a sweep in doubles, as
Madison Ballard and
Marija Leko won 6-2 from the No. 1 pairing, while
Vera Griva and
Marily Canellopoulos also captured a 6-2 win from the No. 2 spot. Nicole Heninger and
Livia Christman completed the sweep with a 6-4 win from No. 3 doubles.
The Lakers continued their strong play in singles as they won five out of six matches. Griva and Ballard both won from No. 1 and No. 2 singles, with a 6-0, 6-1 win from Griva, while Ballard tallied a 6-2, 6-3 win from the No. 2 slot. Leko dropped a three set match from the No. 3 singles position by a score of 6-4, 2-6, 7-10, while Canellopoulos played out of the No. 4 spot and won, 6-3, 6-2. Christman (No. 5; 7-5, 7-6) and Heiniger (No. 6; 6-3, 6-3) added two more points for the team as they captured victories from the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.
Grand Valley State concludes its 2018-19 regular season tomorrow (April 7), in Stow, Ohio with a neutral site match against Wilmington at 9:45 a.m.
