The Grand Valley State baseball team gave up a couple of big innings to the Davenport Panthers on Friday afternoon (April 5) that turned out to be the deciding factor in a 13-8 loss as the Panthers scored 11 runs across just three different innings. The Lakers managed eight runs on 15 hits as they fall to 8-17-1 overall and 1-7-1 in conference play. The two teams will play again tomorrow afternoon (April 6) in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:00 PM at the GVSU Baseball Field.
Junior
Cade Cintorino was tagged with the loss as he falls to 2-3 on the season after he allowed six runs on eight hits in his four innings on the mound.
Junior infielder Parker Mudie led the offensive attack with four hits and three RBI's in his six at-bats.
Christian Faust added two RBI's of his own as he launched his first homer of the season to finish 1-2 at the plate.
Chase Carpenter,
Joe Laudont, and
Drake Ellens all added RBI's of their own.
The Panthers got the scoring started with a solo shot in the top of the second inning but the Lakers answered with a run of their own off the bat of Ellens who single to left center to score Catapano.
DU started the separation in the top of the third inning with a two-run shot before a single two batters later plated another two runs as they took the 5-1 lead. The Lakers offense couldn't get anything going and the Panthers would put up another four spot in the fifth. They tallied four runs on four hits and were aided by two Laker errors as they went up 9-1.
GVSU would tally a run in the bottom of the fifth as well as two more in the bottom of the sixth as Laudont, Murdie and Carpenter all tallied RBI's. Unfortunately for the Lakers, the Panthers would go deep twice in the top of the eighth inning for three more runs to take a 12-4 lead.
Faust launched his homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to push the Lakers to six runs but the Panthers had already scored three in the top of the frame and added another in the top of the ninth to make it 13-6.
