GVSU Completes Sweep Over Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday

Lakers claim 7-1 and 9-8 GLIAC wins over the Rangers

The Grand Valley State baseball team completed a four-game sweep over the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers Saturday, claiming a 7-1  win in game one, followed by a 9-8 walk-off win in the finale. GVSU improves to 13-19-1 overall and 6-9-1 in GLIAC action. GVSU will host Hillsdale Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Game 1
GVSU scored single runs in the first and second innings on four hits and a pair of Ranger errors, then opened the game up with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the third. LF Connor Grice singled to right to plate two Joe Laudont and Nathan Bonter who singled and doubled to open the inning. Bonter scored in the fifth when he walked to open the inning and later scored a bases loaded walk to 3B Christian Faust. Bonter closed the scoring with a solo blast to right.

Michael Morelli picked up the win, yielding one run on six hits with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. Bonter, who was 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored, doubled and homered in the contest. Grice was 3-for-4 with two RBI. 

Game 2
The Lakers scored nine runs and pounded out 15 hits in game two that concluded in walk-off fashion. GVSU scored a single run in the second when a Faust single to left scored Drake Ellens to singled to right with one our and advanced to second on a wild pitch. UWP tied the game in the top of the third, but GVSU answered with two runs in the bottom of the third on one hit and the help of a Ranger error with two outs. Parkside took the lead (5-3) with four runs on three hits and two bases loaded walks by the GVSU pitching staff. Trailing 6-3, RF Chase Carpenter plated a run with a sac fly, while Ellens doubled to left to score Cocco who doubled earlier in the inning. 

A solo home run upped the lead to 7-5, but the Lakers answered with a run in the sixth, followed by another run in the seventh to tie the game. Ellens reached base with a bunt single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to center by C Ryan Lorber. GVSU took the lead in the bottom of the eighth when Laudont singled to open the inning, advanced to second on a sac bunt and scored on a Cocco double. 

However, the Rangers tied the game with a solo home run to set up the dramatic finish. Lorber opened the bottom of the ninth with a single and Cameron Brayman, who was pinch running, advanced to second on a sac bunt. Brayman moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly to center off the bat of pinch hitter Jonathon Catapano. 

Six Laker pitchers saw action and Brendan Nearing picked up the win getting two outs in the top of the ninth. Christian Mercure pitched 3.1 innings of effective relief, while Brett Nearing added 1.1 innings of scoreless work. 

Laudont was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Ellens was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Lorber added two hits and an RBI.
