ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State Sawyers (Lakers) took down the Michigan Tech Huskies, 71-53, Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action in front of 2,688 fans at the Fieldhouse Arena. GVSU has won four games in a row, their longest win streak of the season, and sit 16-11 on the season and 10-9 in GLIAC play. The loss eliminates Michigan Tech from post-season contention.
The theme of strong defense continued as GVSU held the Huskies to a .339 shooting percentage. GVSU scored the first eight points of the game and would maintain a double-digit advantage for most of the game, including a 45-20 lead at halftime. Four Sawyers (Lakers) scored in double-figures;
Hunter Hale (14),
Justin Greason (13),
Jake Van Tubbergen (12) and
Jeremiah Ferguson (10). Van Tubbergen also secured nine rebounds, one board shy of a second straight double-double. Hale recorded seven steals in the game, the most by a GVSU player since Feb. 6, 2014 when Rob Woodson had seven steals against Northern Michigan.
The Lakers only took 16 shots in the second half, milking clock and relying on a strong defense that forced 19 turnovers in the game. GVSU, having already clinched a GLIAC Tournament berth, wraps up the regular season with the first-place Davenport Panthers this Thursday (Feb. 28) at 8:00 PM. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 96.1 FM and ESPN3 while @GVSUBasketball will provide live Twitter updates.
