The 2018-19 basketball regular season is starting to wind down and the No. 12 Lakers will make their final conference road trip this weekend when they travel to Saginaw Valley State on Thursday, Feb. 14 for a 6:00 PM contest and Northwood on Saturday, Feb. 16 for a 4:00 PM showdown. The Lakers enter the weekend 21-2 overall and 14-1 in the conference. SVSU is currently 4-18 (4-11 GLIAC) and Northwood sports a 10-13 (7-8 GLIAC) record but will face Davenport on Thursday.

Earlier this season, the Lakers posted a 2-0 record at home when they took down the Cardinals by a 64-46 final score and pulled away late from the Timberwolves, 67-51, inside GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.

GVSU is also the first team in the GLIAC to secure a GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal home game, which goes to the top four seeds of the tournament. That game will take place on Tuesday, March 5 inside GVSU Fieldhouse Arena at a time to be determined. The subsequent semifinal and final rounds (March 9 & 10) will be held at the highest remaining seed after the quarterfinals have taken place. Also closing in on a home game to open the tournament are Ashland (21-2, 13-2), Northern Michigan (17-6, 12-3), and Michigan Tech (16-7, 12-3).

The Lakers turned in another dominant weekend last Thursday and Saturday, earning wins over Purdue Northwest (84-36) and Wisconsin-Parkside (84-51) to move past the 20-win mark for the 5th straight season. Junior center Cassidy Boensch earned her second straight GLIAC Player of the Week award – and also became the 24th Laker in program history to record 1,000 career points – after averaging 22.0 points on 72.7% (16-22) shooting, 10.5 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks to lead the Lakers to the weekend sweep. She is now averaging a league-best 19.8 points and is also pulling down 12.0 rebounds per game to go along with 75 rejections.

Junior guard Jenn DeBoer is second on the squad with 15.8 points per game and leads in both three-pointers made (48) and three-point percentage (36.4%). She also has a team-leading 93 assists.

Junior forward Maddie Dailey is now averaging 9.7 points per game but has averaged 11.0 over her last eight contests to help the Lakers through a tough stretch in the middle of the season. Just behind Dailey are GVSU's other two starters, Victoria Hedemark and Natalie Koenig, who are averaging 7.9 and 7.2 points, respectively. Hedemark is also the team-leader with 53 steals while Koenig has chipped in 69 assists and 37 steals.

Dating back to the Cardinals and Lakers last meeting on January 10, a 64-46 GVSU victory, SVSU has dropped eight of their last nine contests and are just 2-7 on their home court. Senior forward Abby Duffy, the GLIAC leader in rebounds (12.1 per game), leads the Cardinals with 14.5 points per game as well. She's shooting an efficient 42.8% in her 33.1 minutes per game. Freshman guard Maddie Barrie is having an solid first season, averaging 10.9 points and 3.2 boards per game. Senior guard Hannah Settingsgaard is the final Cardinal averaging double digit points, as she's putting in 10.3 per game.

As a team, SVSU is scoring just 57.5 points per game but are allowing 69.8 on the defensive end.

Northwood is two games over .500 on their home court, sporting a 6-4 record inside Riepma Arena. The Timberwolves have also been in a lot of competitive games, as evidenced by their 61.6 ppg scored and 63.0 ppg allowed.

Two Timberwolves are scoring double digit points this season, led by sophomore guard Ellie Taylor. In her 31.7 minutes per game, she is pouring in 13.0 points on 40.2% shooting and is knocking down threes at the same clip. Adrianna Stolicker is averaging exactly 10.0 points per contest as well. Just behind the top-scorers though is sophomore Kenzie Seeley who is putting in 9.8 points and senior Grace German (9.0 points).

Following this weekend's contests, the Lakers will close out the regular season with three home games starting with Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech on Feb. 21 & 23 and ending with Davenport on Feb. 28.
