#3 Lakers defeat Central State 80-54 on Wednesday afternoon

GVSU begins GLIAC play Thurs. Dec. 5 at home vs. Parkside

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The #3 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team defeated Central State 80-54 in a road contest on Wednesday afternoon. GVSU improves to 6-0 overall, while Central State falls to 2-5 on the season. The Lakers will take over a week off before resuming action on Thursday, December 5 against Parkside in the GLIAC opener inside the GVSU Fieldhouse at 6:00 PM.
 
Senior center Cassidy Boensch led the Lakers with a double-double (21 points, 11 rebounds), while Maddie Dailey (16 points), Victoria Hedemark (13 points), and Haley Swing (10 points) each scored in double-figures. Senior guard Taryn Taugher totaled seven points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
 
As a team, the Lakers shot 52.7% (29-55) from the field and held Central State to just 30.8% (20-65) shooting including 20.8% (5-24) from behind the arc. GVSU out-rebounded the Marauders by a 45-26 margin and forced 16 CSU turnovers, while recording nine steals and seven blocks.
 
The Lakers jumped out to an 11-2 lead through the first five minutes of play and increased their lead to 19-9 with 49 seconds left in the quarter. Central State would score five points in the final 30 seconds to cut the Laker lead to 19-14 after one quarter of play.
 
The second quarter was all GVSU as they outscored Central State 22-4 in the frame. The Marauders would not score the final 4:51 of the first half and the Lakers finished the half on a 20-2 run, which gave them a 41-18 lead at the break. GVSU has outscored its opponents 122-44 in the second quarter across the team's first six games.
 
GVSU would continue to hold Central State without a basket until the 6:21 mark in the third quarter. The Lakers had built their largest lead of the game at 50-18 with 6:42 remaining in the third and maintained at least a 22-point lead for the rest of the game.
