ALLENDALE, Mich. – The #3 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team came away with a hard fought 72-57 victory on Sunday afternoon against Lewis University at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Flyers drop to 2-2 overall.

Four different Lakers scored in double-figures with senior forward Maddie Dailey leading the way with 20 points. Senior guard Taryn Taugher totaled 14 points, Cassidy Boensch 12 points, and Victoria Hedemark 10 points as the Lakers starting five scored 64 of the team's 72 points. Boensch had a team-high 12 rebounds, while Dailey added six rebounds.

Senior guard Jenn DeBoer stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, 12 assists, six rebounds, and three steals. With 1:20 remaining in the fourth quarter, DeBoer buried a three pointer which gave her 1,000 points for her career. She is the 25th player in program history to complete the feat.

GVSU jumped out to a 7-0 lead through the first three minutes of play, but Lewis went on an 11-4 run to tie the game. After a jumper by Dailey, the Flyers would score the final two baskets of the quarter to lead 15-13 after 10 minutes of play.

The second quarter was all Lakers as they outscored Lewis 21-7 with five three-point baskets including two by Taugher. GVSU held Lewis without a field goal for the final 3:58 of the half and went into the break up 34-22.

GVSU would extend their lead to 13 at 50-37 with 2:28 remaining in the third quarter before Lewis scored seven straight points to trim the Laker lead to just six at 50-44. A layup by Hedemark in the closing seconds of the quarter would put GVSU up 52-44 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lakers held a double-digit lead for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, however Lewis would cut into the lead once again and only trailed by seven, 62-55, with 3:07 to go in the game. A Boensch layup, two free throws by Taugher, a DeBoer three-pointer, and a layup by Hedemark would put the game out of reach for the Flyers as GVSU extended its lead to a game-high 17 points.
