ALLENDALE, Mich – The #3 ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team cruised to a 49-point victory over Hillsdale on Friday night inside the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena by a score of 74-25. The Lakers improve to 4-0 overall, while Hillsdale drops to 2-3 overall.
The Lakers' defense held Hillsdale to 9-53 (17%) shooting throughout the duration of the contest, while recording 11 steals, five blocks, and forcing 20 turnovers. Seniors
Cassidy Boensch (13),
Taryn Taugher (12), and
Maddie Dailey (11) each scored in double-figures for the Lakers and
Jenn DeBoer,
Haley Swing, and
Victoria Hedemark each tallied seven points. Boensch and DeBoer led the team in rebounds with eight a piece and Dailey recorded five steals.
Hillsdale jumped out to an early 9-2 lead a minute into the game, but the Lakers went on an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the game with 5:20 left in the first quarter. GVSU led 18-13 after the 10 minutes of play. In the second quarter, the Lakers held the Chargers to just two points, while outscoring Hillsdale 17-2 in the quarter. The GVSU defense forced Hillsdale to shoot 1-15 (6.7%) from the field in the quarter and led 35-15 at the half.
GVSU scored the first 10 points of the third quarter and built their lead to 45-15 with 6:09 left in the frame. The Lakers ended the quarter on a 10-3 run and brought a 54-21 lead into the fourth quarter. The GVSU defense remained lock down in the fourth quarter, holding the Chargers to just four points and one field goal, while outscoring them 20-4.
The Lakers will finish their three-game homestand on Sunday at 1:00 against Findlay at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
