MIDLAND, Mich. – The No. 2 seeded Grand Valley State women's tennis team defeated No. 3 Michigan Tech, 4-1, in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) championship semifinals. The Lakers advanced to the semifinals on a shutout win against Ashland on Friday (Oct. 25).
Vera Griva led the Lakers from No. 1 singles for the 12
th time this season, defeating her opponent, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman
Taylor Barrett recorded her 11
th singles win on the season, 7-6, 6-2, in No. 3 singles play. Also earning a Laker win in singles match play was
Marily Canellopoulos (6-3, 6-2) in No. 4 singles.
Agata Szewczuk dropped the No. 6 singles match, 6-2, 6-3.
GVSU added two doubles match wins, notching their season total to 30. Griva and Canellopoulos teamed up for a win from No. 1 doubles, while
Marija Leko and Barrett finished Laker scoring with a 6-4 win in No. 2 doubles.
The Lakers take on No. 1 Wayne State in the GLIAC finals on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 9 a.m. at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.
