GVSU Advances To Championship Sunday With A 7-0 Win Over Hillsdale

Lakers face Southern Indiana Sunday at 11 am

Grand Valley State's second meeting with Hillsdale College in the NCAA D2 Midwest Regional Saturday (May 12) was a far cry from the first meeting Thursday (May 10) in which Hillsdale won 1-0, allowing the Lakers just three hits. In its second elimination game of the day, GVSU hammered the Chargers 7-0, pounding out 12 hits, while senior pitcher Allie Grys (14-2) allowed just two hits in the complete game victory. GVSU (43-8) will now have to defeat Southern Indiana (33-22) twice on Sunday in order to advance to the NCAA D2 Midwest Super Regional. First pitch for game one is 11 am Sunday (May 13) at the GVSU Softball Field.

Senior 3B Teagan Shomin opened the top of the first with a walk and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Kaylie Rhynard. Shomin advanced to third on an infield single by 2B Nikoma Holmen and Shomin scored on a passed ball to give GVSU a 1-0 lead. The Shomin show continued as Jessica Ramos singled with one out in the fifth and Shomin drilled an 0-1 pitch into the trees in center field to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead.

The Lakers put the game out of reach with four runs in the sixth on five hits. Bailey Thatcher singled and Shomin was hit by a pitch. Rhynard singled up the middle to score Thatcher and DH Kaitlyn Plocinski advanced both runners with a sac bunt. Holmen singled to center to score Shomin and Rhynard,  Brooke Henning followed with a single and 1B Kelcie LaTour closed the scoring with a single up the middle to plate Holmen and give GVSU a 7-0 lead.

Grys pitched a gem, allowing just two hits on 88 pitches. She recorded 11 ground outs and eight fly outs in seven innings of work. Shomin was 2-for-2 with three runs scored two RBI and a 2-run HR, while Holmen was 3-for-4 with two RBI.
