GVSU Falls To Southern Indiana 2-1 In Midwest Region Title Game

Lakers end season 44-9

Grand Valley State dropped a 2-1 decision to Southern Indiana in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region 1 title game Sunday afternoon. GVSU ends the season with  a 44-9 record, while Southern Indiana (34-23) advances to the Midwest Super Regional at Illinois Springfield.

GVSU forced a second title game with a 5-3 win over USI Sunday morning. In game two, Southern Indiana threatened in the first inning, getting a runner on third with no outs, but GVSU junior pitcher Allison Lipovsky retired the next three batters to keep the Eagles off the board.  Southern Indiana scored its only two runs on a two-out double in the top of the third to take a 2-0 lead.

The Lakers pounded out nine hits, compared to just four for Southern Indiana, but stranded 10 on base, including at least one in every inning but the seventh. GVSU scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Brooke Henning singled and scored on a Kaitlyn Plocinski single to right field.

3B Teagan Shomin was 2-for-3 with a walk, while Plocinski also collected a pair of hits. Jessica Ramos reached base three times with a hit and two walks. Lipovsky yielded two runs on four hits with three strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Grand Valley State will lose the services of seniors OF Courtney Reinhold, 3B Teagan Shomin, UT Tanner Kiessel, P Allie Grys and C Jessica Ramos
