ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- The No. 13 Grand Valley State Lakers fell to the No. 2 Lindenwood Lions, 15-13, in non-conference action Monday at Hunter Stadium. GVSU rallied for three goals late in the second half, but the comeback ran out of time and the Lakers saw their eight-match win streak snapped. GVSU falls to 9-3 on the year while Lindenwood moves to 13-0 on the season.
For the second time this season, goalie
Brianna DeMilia broke the single-game save record for GVSU, stopping 19 shots on Monday to keep the Lakers close.
Meghan Datema and
Abbi O'Neal led the way offensively with three goals each while
Carly Shisler caged a pair to go along with an assist. Shisler took a team-high seven shots in the contest. The teams finished even in draw controls at 15-15, a positive for the Lakers against a Lions team that had been winning two out of every three draws on the year entering play.
Lindenwood entered the matchup with one of the best defenses in the country, allowing under six goals a match, but the Lakers were able to break through early.
Maria D'Angelo opened the scoring for the match and the teams traded leads through the first several minutes. Trailing 6-4 midway through the first half, GVSU rattled off a 6-1 run in a five-minute span to jump in front, 10-7, with eight minutes left in the opening period. The Lakers would go quiet offensively for the rest of the half, but still carried a 10-9 lead into halftime. Lindenwood opened up the second period with a 6-0 sprint before the Lakers began their late rally with six minutes left to go. O'Neal would get a shot on target with a minute to go, but a save from Lindenwood keeper Rachel Ortell sealed the win for the Lions.
The Lakers return to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action Friday on the road at No. 15 Indianapolis at 7:00 PM. The Lakers look for the regular season sweep after beating the Greyhounds two weeks ago in Allendale. GVSULakers.com and @GVSUWLAX on Twitter will have live coverage of the matchup.
